From founder to Portfolio Director: building something new with a bigger toolbox
Sbit Hospitality joined Your.Cloud in 2022. After joining Your.Cloud Sbit managed to accelerate its growth and Sjors became Portfolio Director a few years later, growing the hospitality portfolio with the addition of VSA and now looking to expand across Europe.
After 23 years of building Sbit Hospitality into a market leader for hotel IT services, its founder knew what he was good at. But he also knew something was missing.
“What do you know? You know what you have developed yourself over those 23 years. And now you have a much broader perspective on it.”
That broader view came through Your.Cloud—where he now plays a new role: helping build a European hospitality IT portfolio, not with his own capital, but with the support of a larger group.
Sbit’s original plan had been to grow by acquisition. But COVID changed that path dramatically.
“What we initially looked at was growing ourselves,” he explains. “To see if we could make acquisitions, what exactly could we do in that aspect.”
Then the pandemic hit.
“That didn’t exactly make the hospitality industry very popular with banks,” he says with understatement.
It was around then that a different kind of conversation began—one that changed everything.
“Eventually, someone came along and said, ‘Have you ever thought about just selling your shares and still doing what you want to do?’”
What stood out to him was that he didn’t have to stop building. He just no longer had to do it alone—or carry all the risk.
“Establishing a strong hospitality portfolio in Europe, not with our own money, rather with that of Your.Cloud in this case.”
And that shift has reinvigorated his sense of purpose.
“Entrepreneurship is always fun. Ultimately, you thrive on success. That’s what you’ve been doing all these years,” he says. “It’s no different here, except now you can also share it with others.”
One of the biggest shifts after joining Your.Cloud was access to new knowledge—not just for him, but for his team.
“In the end, if you have been running your own business for 23 years, you reach a level where you can’t really spar with others anymore. You have to seek that outside your organisation. And now, within the group, you have thirty companies. That’s really a knowledge boost.”
And it trickles down through the organisation. Where once people operated in silos, now they collaborate.
“For example, if you have a guest support manager… someone responsible for assisting guests—we handle Wi-Fi, telephony, television, and infrastructure. These managers used to have to do everything on their own.”
Now? “They can just call a colleague company when there’s an issue.”
Q: What if I still want to be an entrepreneur?
A: That’s encouraged. “It’s no different here,” says Sbit’s founder. “Except now you can also share it with others.”
Q: Will I lose the freedom to build?
A: No—you’ll likely gain it. Instead of funding growth alone, you’ll have a partner backing your ambition.
Q: Will I still lead my company?
A: You can. Or, as in this case, you might step into a broader strategic role.
Q: What about my team?
A: They gain too. “Now they can just call a colleague company when there’s an issue,” Sjors explains.
Q: What’s the biggest surprise?
A: The pace of learning. “I could never have learned so much so quickly as I have now.”
